PHYSICAL THERAPY PRACTICE TEST
The NPTE is used to evaluate the capability of licensure candidates who have graduated from either an accredited physical therapy program or comparable non-accredited program.
The NPTE is a computer-based, multiple-choice test. You will have 5 hours to complete 250 questions.
Documentation must be submitted and approved for individuals requiring special accommodations when taking the exam.
What content areas will be assessed on this exam?
The questions of this exam are broken down into two categories: Body System and Non-system. Within the Body System category, there are questions on:
- Physical Therapy Examination
- Foundations for Evaluation, Differential Diagnosis, & Prognosis
- Interventions
The systems assessed are cardiovascular & pulmonary, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular & nervous, integumentary, metabolic & endocrine, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, lymphatic, and system interactions.
Under the Non-system category, the questions will be on the topics of equipment, devices, & technologies, therapeutic modalities, safety & protection, professional responsibilities, and research & evidence-based practice.
How can I register for the National Physical Therapy exam?
The most convenient way to register is online. This can be done 24 hours a day, 7days a week. You also have the option of registering over the phone during the office hours.
What is the cost of the exam?
The current fee for this exam is $400, but it is expected to increase sometime after January 1, 2019. The fee is payable by Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. There is also an $85 test center fee to take this exam. It can be paid via Visa, MasterCard, or debit from a checking account.
What should I bring the day of the exam?
Bring two forms of identification, which is any current, valid, government-issued ID as well as a form of identification that contains your pre-printed name and your signature.
Examples of satisfactory identification are passport and driver’s license. Your social security card is not a suitable form of ID.
Items such as study materials and a cell phone are not allowed in the testing area. In addition, you are not allowed to use your cell phone even when you take a break outside of the testing area.
What happens after I take the exam?
Approximately 10 days after taking your test, you can log in to your account for your score report. This free score report is viewable online for 30 days. After this 30-day period, you can purchase a report that does not expire.
How do I know if I passed the exam?
The NPTE score scale is 200-800. A score of 600 or greater is considered passing.
What happens if I don’t pass the exam?
Although there is slight variation in different jurisdictions, typically, you are given up to three chances in a 12-month period to take the exam. Another attempt at the exam can be the next scheduled test date.
